2023: NOT PERFECT; JUST BETTER!.

Martial ZounonBy Martial Zounon · January 5, 2023 · 2 min read

We begin every year with a list of decisions and resolutions meant to make us slightly more perfect beings. During the first months of the year, we wear ourselves out pitifully trying to carry them through. We pour all our energy into it before facing the fact that certain resolutions are simply beyond our reach.

We then fall under the yoke of discouragement. And this is not a case of stationary discouragement: that form of weariness which makes us give up on everything and stay at the same level. No!

It is more a case of regressive discouragement: the kind that makes us lose the small gains we had made and sends us backwards. For example, if we had managed to lose 5 kilograms, this type of discouragement makes us put those five (5) kilograms back on, plus three (3) more. In the end, we find ourselves in a worse position than the one we were in before implementing those resolutions.

For 2023, we are going to change the game: we will simply work at being, today, a better version than the one we were yesterday. And for that, the exercise will unfold in three (3) steps:

1- establish a better connection with yourself: this amounts to listening to ourselves more and paying attention to our deep desires, conscious and unconscious. The aim of this connection is to have a clear idea of our needs. A need can be defined as the gap arising from the will to make an unsatisfactory situation satisfactory. Becoming aware of our needs will push us to channel our energies all year long.

2- become aware of our singularity in relation to others: as the saying goes, "it takes all sorts to make a world". Along those lines, it is worth acknowledging that we cannot all be treated alike. Nature knows certain orders and certain hierarchies that it is pointless to fight. We must therefore secure our place and own it. Every person is unique and nature needs that uniqueness. Let us avoid, then, the unhealthy comparisons that harm us and destroy us. The neighbour’s grass is not always as green as it looks.

3- do more each day: it turns out to be very important to realize that our competitors are not external to us. The first competitor to outdo daily is the person you were yesterday, a week ago, a month ago. In the end, the ultimate horizon is to finish 2023 better than we finished 2022. And better does not necessarily mean in a better financial position. We are talking here about better physical, financial, psychological, mental and professional health, and so on. The indicators are yours alone.

All in all, for 2023, the goal is not to be perfect, because in any case perfection is not of this world. The vision is to be a better version of yourself every day, every week, every month.

A wonderful and invigorating 2023 to you all!!!
