Today we squabble and we fight
We battle one another, day and night
But all of us, every one, must end one day
We all leave this earth, and leave for always.
We carry nothing with us when we’re through
No gold, no silver, no house, no bijou
Leaving behind all that we have built and planned
Leaving those who have loved us, or banned.
Step back a little and you see the void inside
That void that leaves us vile and stupefied
That void that leaves us wicked, greed our guide
And we forget life’s whole and splendid side
We lie, we kill, we betray one another
All of it in vain, and all for a big fat zero.
We traffic, we shatter, we buzz and bother
Instead of loving and cherishing, so as to be heroes.
When will we come back to what is essential?
When will life itself be our preoccupation?
When will we move past these crises existential?
For a true life of love, of joy and of compassion?
It is certain that our animosities
Lead us to nothing but idle velleities.
The pains we cause here and there with ferocity
Are in the end no more than vanity of vanities.
Sometimes we feel that we have won the day
Later, we see the illusion in which we lay
Conflicts one, two, three,… right up to twenty
Are all of them useless, barren, null and empty.
So let us cultivate the love of our fellow man
Let us hold one another, hand in hand
Let us labour to build a healthy land
And leave our children a better tomorrow at hand.
